Jan 07, 2022

You may be asking yourself, “What is Reiki and how is it administered?” Reiki is an ancient Japanese form of energy healing that has been around for thousands of years. This is done through channeling energy through touch to help heal the body and relieving stress as well as balance a person’s own energy. You maybe curious as to the meaning of the name Reiki? Reiki is two Japanese words put together “rei” means “the higher power” and “ki” meaning “life force energy”.  Reiki therapy can help a person physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually through channeling energy reaching the cause of the issue. You can think of Reiki as a meditative state where healing can begin.

Does Reiki really work? Many people have heard of Reiki and may be usure if Reiki really works or is right for them. According to Dr Ann Baldwin from the University of Arizona’s College of Medicine, she explains that everyone has an electromagnetic field surrounding our bodies. It is believed that the interaction between two human magnetic fields could be an explanation for how energy healing works. The National Institutes of Health survey states that  1.2 million adults and 161,000 children in the United States received energy healing therapy for help with relaxation, anxiety, pain management, and depression, according to a study in the March–April 2017 issue of Holistic Nursing Practice. (3,4). Other benefits would include reducing high blood pressure and increasing immunity for overall health.

Does Reiki help with pain and stress of surgery? There was a research study of 46 patients divided into 3 groups. One group receiving Reiki , the second group receiving placebo Reiki and the 3rd group received no Reiki or placebo Reiki. Only the patients who received Reiki saw significant reductions in pain, blood pressure, breathing rate, and anxiety pre- and post-surgery. For more in information on studies follow this link.

Does Reiki help with pain? Modern medicine is now catching up with ancient treatments of Reiki therapy for pain. To demonstrate how well it works a study was conducted in Rio Grande do Sul with 10 individuals between the 70 to 80. All patients had non cancer chronic pain. All participants reported a reduction of pain, and one reported no pain at all. There were also improvements in mobility and day-to-day daily activities with an overall feeling of well being and good mood. It is felt that a deep relaxation releases negative feelings and self thoughts.

Does Reiki help with anxiety? One of the main benefits of Reiki is reducing stress. Today life is very stressful compared to our parent’s or grandparent’s time. There is no time to slow down and take time for ourselves leaving our bodies in a stressful state all the time. We need time to return to a state of relaxation where our bodies can heal themselves and Reiki can bring us to that deep relaxation that we need. Reiki helps our bodies to remain calm and not in a continual flight or fight state brought on by stress, lack of sleep and confrontations.

Using Reiki to boost your immune system. It is well known that stress has an impact on our bodies immune system and when we are stressed, we become run down. Reiki helps our body's energy to flow freely helping our bodies to relax so we feel happier and less stressed. It is interesting that our immune system is a team of systems all through our body that work together to keep us healthy. We can't just work on one area of our body to increase our immunity and that is were Reiki healing is so valuable working on all of our systems and balancing our energy.

Using Reiki to lower our blood pressure.  Reiki has many effects on the body such as stopping blockages of energy flow which can lead to diseases resulting in lower blood pressure. It is through deep relation that our body can lower systolic blood pressure and reduce stress . It has been discovered that Reiki healing can restore sleep habits which poor sleep habits can lead to high blood pressure. One last area is improvement of mood. When people feel more light hearted, less anxious and depressed, they are more likely to look after themselves and exercise, meet with friends and have a positive outlook towards life.
